Restoring Hope and Trust Together in a Time of Chaos

Restoring Hope and Trust Together in a Time of Chaos
What do you believe in? What do you hope for? Where does your trust lie?
By Dr. Susanne T. Eden
Evil seems to have erupted in every corner of the world. Humanity is being torn apart by forces that a few years ago were unthinkable. The safety and security that we’ve come to expect is no longer a given. Most frightening of all is the profound sense of powerlessness. How are we to find our way forward?
To survive the chaos, we can choose to go about our day as though nothing were happening — stopping at the coffee shop, buying our groceries, and complaining about the price of meat. We can look to the hottest influencer on TikTok or YouTube for guidance. Meanwhile, we stand by as all the institutions we once trusted to give structure to our lives crumble. Religion, politics, justice systems, medicine, and education can no longer be trusted. Is there nothing we can do but wait for the evil to bring an end to all that’s good in the world?

We’re in this together
The world isn’t populated with isolated individuals. It’s a tapestry of life with each thread connected and bound to all the rest. We share the same breath, the same energy with every atom on the planet. What happens to one happens to all. The little child running free in the mountains of Afghanistan suffers the consequences of the billionaire whose jet damages the air he breathes. The actions of the drug lord in Columbia deprive the world of a gifted young musician.

We all have a part to play in restoring hope and trust
The words “hope” and “faith” and “trust” have all lost their significance and been replaced by distrust, cynicism, and fear. Amidst all the uncertainty, there’s one thing that’s certain — fear and worry will destroy us as surely as any outside evil can.
Now is not the time to go inward and live in distress or denial.
Begin by restoring hope and trust within yourself. Doing so doesn’t have to come from grand gestures. It grows through small, human choices repeated every day. Here are some suggestions:
Focus on what you can control. You may not be able to control the evil forces, but you can control your response to them. When the world feels chaotic, tending to your own actions restores a sense of agency. Choosing kindness, integrity, and honesty in daily interactions rebuilds trust from the inside out.

Take care of yourself. Practices like reflection, prayer, meditation, journaling, or time in nature help steady your inner self and open the channel that connects you to the universal source of energy. A calm inner world allows you to respond thoughtfully instead of reacting in fear.

Shift your thinking from self to others. Humans are biologically, psychologically, and socially wired for connection. Across history, individuals who cared for and cooperated with others were more likely to endure hardship, find meaning, and recover from stress. In times of uncertainty and chaos we need connection more than ever.

Strengthen community, one relationship at a time. When you focus on others, you build trust and mutual support. Strong relationships increase your chances of receiving help during illness, loss, or crisis. From early human tribes to modern communities, survival has depended on cooperation, not isolation. Checking on a neighbor, volunteering, sharing a meal, or simply staying connected reminds you that you’re not alone.

Choose trust over divisiveness. As humans, the tendency is to seek information that confirms entrenched beliefs. It’s very difficult to change these beliefs, and these competing beliefs are the genesis of divisiveness between individuals and among nations and factions. Trust is rebuilt when we seek reliable information and hold it gently without fearmongering or blame. Be open and, whenever possible, get to know the “other” — be it an immigrant, a homeless person, or perhaps a neighbor from another part of your own country. There’s a core of common needs at the heart of every individual. This is what gives us hope and trust.

Be the world you wish to be. Hope is contagious. When you live with patience, humility, and purpose, you quietly invite others to do the same. Change begins when someone is brave enough to embody it.

Hope and trust are at the heart of the healing journey
Healing from the negative energy of fear and doubt is not only critical for your healing but it contributes to the collective healing. It takes time, but by reawakening your deep spiritual self, you provide healing to a tattered universe.

A closing reflection
To live with hope and trust in not to ignore reality. It’s to live from a place where we see the mysterious beauty and order that governs the universe. I believe that the force of energy that causes the seasons to unfold, the moon to rule the tides, and the tiny wildflower to open on the forest floor will not abandon us.
Let this be your year of hope and trust. Goodness can still grow, even here, even now. Every compassionate choice, however small, is a thread in the mending of our tattered humanity. It isn’t new age woo woo to believe that when you nurture positive energy within, you lift the energy of the planet.
Don’t give in to either despair or denial. The universal source of all that is beautiful and orderly is on your side.
