Poem: On Drifting Apart
By Dr. Archan Mehta
It is time to say good-bye, but I don’t
Know why I sigh when I shake hands
With you: maybe it is because I feel
Blue at the thought that we may never
Meet again, friend. We go back a long
Way: we used to be children at play,
Floating paper boats on a clear, blue lake.
For your sake, I remember how I would
Offer you a piece of fruit to satisfy your
Hunger and, to quench your thirst, a glass
Of water too. We were true to our childhood
Once upon a time, but, sadly, time has
Moved on and so must we: parting feels
Almost like it is written in our destiny.
Even so, I will keep hope alive and stay
Optimistic about our chances to meet again:
We are soul travelers and, therefore, eternal friends.
