Wayne Dyer on the Bonnie Hunt Show

Tuesday, November 10th, 2009

Wayne Dyer appeared on the Bonnie Hunt show this morning for the entire hour. What surprised me most about watching him on the show was how open he was with some very personal matters and how ‘human’/'normal’ he is. For example, he talked candidly about how he grew up in a foster home and how he forgave his father after years of hating him for walking out on him and his family. Wayne also went into detail about his divorce.

He spoke with compassion, humility and gratitude as he talked about his extremely difficult and personal ordeals; and explained he would not be the person he is today without going through these situations. He said that all of them helped him become a better man because he now has more compassion and can help other people learn about forgiveness.

Additionally, towards the end of the show, Dr. Dyer’s daughter came on stage. She talked about how she recently dropped out of law school and was initially worried about telling her dad. So, she sent him a text message telling him that she had dropped out of law school. Wayne told her that he completely supported her decision and encouraged her to follow her passion.

Wayne also revealed on the show that he now has been diagnosed with leukemia. He said that he was not going to let this diagnosis stress him out or cause him to worry. He appeared to be completely at peace with it and believed the experience would help him. His diagnosis is not slowing his career down. He is still speaking at conferences and is planning on writing another book, Wishes Fulfilled.

iParticipate TV initiative increases volunteering

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

The Entertainment Industry Foundation’s iParticipate campaign to urge viewers to give back to their community is paying off. One of Hollywood’s major charitable organizations, Entertainment Industry Foundation, encouraged networks, studios and stars to insert volunteering into their story lines and advertisements this week. More than 100 programs on ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC and cable networks such as Nickelodeon and Lifetime have highlighted community service, either through their shows’ plots or public-service announcements. “We thought we’d have 20 or 30 programs involved,” said Lisa Paulsen, chief executive of the EIF. “It’s just caught on like wildfire.”

Examples include the doctors on ABC’s “Private Practice” giving homeless teenagers free checkups. On NBC’s “30 Rock”, a character tries to adopt all the dogs at an animal shelter. And on CBS’ “Numb3rs,” two characters talk about joining Big Brothers and Big Sisters. The result has been an increase in volunteering.

However, the project has sparked suspicion and some criticism that Hollywood is doing this just to show support for President Barack Obama’s call for national service and as an effort to prop up left-wing causes. Lisa Paulsen, chief executive of the EIF, responded to these allegations by saying, “All of our political leaders have made national service a priority…This is a nonpartisan initiative. I don’t see that there’s anything negative that can be taken from this in any way, shape or form, because it really is about true citizenship.”

This event is also about using entertainment to create a positive impact on society. It is an example of the type of influence that TV and entertainment can have on people. The story lines in popular shows this week quite literally changed the behavior of their viewers and motivated them to take a positive action, volunteering, that they probably would not have otherwise taken if they had not watched those programs.

For better or for worse and either consciously or unconsciously, TV, media and the entertainment industry have a huge impact on the behavior, consciousness and actions of their viewers, society and our culture. Hopefully, this event will inspire people in the entertainment industry to take responsibility for that impact and produce more programs that make a positive contribution to society.

Dalai Lama faces tough questions in interview with Wolf Blitzer

Thursday, October 8th, 2009

The Dalai Lama sat down for a televised interview with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer today. Wolf Blitzer asked the Dalai Lama some tough questions about the decision to postpone a personal meeting with President Obama until after next month’s presidential visit to China.

His Holiness said he was not disappointed that he did not get to visit the White House during his visit to Washington last week. He said, “(Obama) already…indicated he is going to speak with the Chinese. And it seems that he possibly (will be) seriously engaging with the Chinese about the Tibet issue.”

He went on to defend his position by saying, “Sometimes, you see, a little tough stand also helpful…(but) a more conciliatory sort of attitude (is) sometimes…more helpful. So, this time…I do not want to create any inconvenience to anybody…(and wish) to avoid embarrassment to the Chinese president.”

The Dalai Lama did say that he would likely visit the White house by the end of this year or the beginning of 2010.

Rwandan genocide survivor on forgiveness

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

Immaculee Ilibagiza survived the 1994 Rwandan genocide – which left a million people, including her parents, dead – by hiding in a tiny bathroom with seven other women for 91 days. She started hiding as a healthy young woman and emerged weighing 65 pounds, but her faith and willingness to forgive remained strong. She will tell her story of survival and forgiveness in IMMACULEE: HOLD ONTO HOPE, a part of a special programming airing on PBS stations in August 2009. Check your local PBS listings.

As told in her book Left to Tell, Ilibagiza accepted shelter in the home of a Rwandan pastor after tensions between Hutus and Tutsis turned into mass murder and unspeakable brutality. After hiding there for three months, she learned that most of her family had been killed. She managed to escape death, but more importantly she also found a way to escape the bitterness, cynicism and anger that leads to resignation, hatred and a desire for revenge. In IMMACULEE: HOLD ONTO HOPE, she explains how she has found the strength to not only overcome the tragedy, but to forgive the people who perpetrated it.

Some people would call her willingness to forgive a sign of weakness or tolerance. However, as you can hear in her interview below, Immaculee possesses an inner fortitude, courage and strength that is far more powerful and accomplishes much more good than any thought or action based on anger or revenge.
