Spiritual Cinema Circle review

The December films for the Spiritual Cinema Circle include Ocean of Pearls, Charlie Thistle, The Umbrella and The Gift: Episode 3

Produced by Sarab Neelam, M.D, a doctor who still maintains his practice, Ocean of Pearls is about a young doctor who is offered a prestigious position at a Detroit hospital. The successful surgeon, Dr. Amrit Singh, sees this as an opportunity to start fresh; however as a Sikh living in North America, he feels he is of two worlds but belongs to neither. Or as he puts it,

“To my father, the turban is an article of faith. To me, it means I better make damned sure I’m not late for my flight.”

Ocean of Pearls is an entertaining and moving story that portrays a young man learning how to accept himself in the face of constant scrutiny. His values, ethics and sense of who he is are all put to the test as he tries to do his job as an organ transplant surgeon and live his life in Detroit.

This movie shows that is can difficult to accept who we really are and what we stand for. This internal battle for self-acceptance and self-expression that takes place can push us to our limits. However, Ocean of Pearls suggests that if we have the courage to be ourself and live a life of authenticity, then the results are well worth the effort.

Charlie Thistle is a short that tells the story of a bureaucrat who has worked 20 years at the Department of Normality, where change is not tolerated. Charlie wrestles with the the question, “Is this the way things were meant to be?”

This short asks us to consider that maybe there is a different way to view the world than we are accustomed to and that change can lead to a more enjoyable way of life.

The Umbrella is a short film that follows the unexpected adventures of a blind man’s umbrella. This film illustrates the saying of “what goes around, comes around.”

In episode 3 of The Gift, the main characters continue to investigate what humans have done with the powerful gift given by their civilization a 100 years ago.

One of the bonus features for this month is a rare interview with Louise Hay.

Electronic memory,to me, is something that I seemingly will never have enough of. It feels like megabytes and gigabytes have become an inseparable part of my every day existence. Ever since I bought a Micro SD Card for my Nintendo DS flash card, I’ve been constantly vigilant for large memory at cheap prices. It’s driving me crazy.(Submitted using KU2 for R4i Nintendo DS.)
